Reggae Shifting Into Main Stream

This article provides a glimpse into the shift in Reggae from a minor genre to going mainstream. Could Reggae and Jamaica be having an affair?

Go to most any venue or concert in town, and you may find yourself feeling some serious reggae vibes
.
Reggae originated in Jamaica in the 1960s and has long been looked at in the U.S. as beach music typically played by Jamaican artists. But the tide is changing fast, according to Southwest Florida's reggae-inspired bands.

"It used to be that reggae was only found on the beach. But now you have bands like us trying to do something a little different on a more professional scale," said Nickardo Salmon, bass player and vocalist for NostalJah, a reggae band based in Cape Coral.

Salmon, in his thirties, was raised in Jamaica and played reggae there. He met his wife Drea, also a vocalist, in Southwest Florida, and together they started a band in 2015. Now, they play in cities between Naples and Port Charlotte as well as across the state.

He brings reggae, a mix of music elements like rhythm and blues, jazz and Jamaican folk music. She adds a more soulful, R&B sound. And when they fuse them together, they create a sound all their own.

Reggae On The River & Don Carlos

Anticipated fun by Mitch Santell

It was very exciting for me to learn that Don Carlos is going to be performing at @ReggaeOTR on August 3rd to August 5th in partnership with High Times Magazine. Here is what I found on Don Carlos, so enjoy!

Don Carlos(Euvin Spencer) has delivered his distinctive sound for over five decades now; a career deserving of an indepth book! Hailing from musically historic Waterhouse district of Kingston, he formally commenced his career with the initial incarnation of Black Uhuru in 1973. If one looks further, a youthful Euvin recorded some crucial sides in the ’60s like “Sweeter Than Wine”. After the huge impact of Black Uhuru’s “Love Crisis” a.k.a “Black Sounds Of Freedom”, he embarked on a hugely successful solo career(honorable mention to “Gold”; who added his touch on countless projects). In May 1981, he released his debut solo album, “Suffering”. An utterly powerful classic that rolled through like a storm! He’s never looked back and has endured and stayed the Rightful trod. Between 1982-85, he topped the charts on five occasions; getting to the Roots of the matter despite so many changes in the dance.

Between 1989-94, he rejoined Black Uhuru; a fruitful period that resulted in Billboard and Grammy considerations. Since then, Mr. Spencer has amassed a global following. This Roots ambassador attains one of the busiest tour schedules in the business and certifiably is one of the most photographed artists active today. He takes the time to interact with the massive everytime. These days, he’s backed by Dub Vision, a spot on California based riddim section. Every tree has its roots, some members are from the veteran Reggae Angels, who backed him after the second departure from Black Uhuru. A definitive California-Jamaica link; this reviewer recalls countless Don Carlos concerts in the region after the “Deeply Concerned Tour”. Yes, that beautiful album with the Rootsman sitting proudly on the banks of The Potomac River… His last album, “Changes” (2010), was a versatile set that was a brilliant mix of past, present and future vision…

Reggae On The River the non-profit festival that acts as the primary fundraiser for the local Mateel Community Center, is this year extending its services to the people of West Africa, namely the rural community of Zao in Burkina Faso, as well as other destinations around the globe by asking people to donate old tools, bikes, sewing machines, etc. for their Tools For Change program.

Organizers said “The response so far has been so incredible that we've already collected a full container of tools and are now seeking funds to help with shipping costs.
