This looks to be a lot of fun. For all of our listeners who are attending this festival, please let us know what you think. NAPLES, AUGUST 21 - The Greek island of Paxos will become the capital of international reggae music for three days with the Paxos Reggae Festival from August 29 to August 31. A Commentary On Streaming Frustrations by Mitch Santell Big Reggae Mix is committed to you our listeners. First, we want to thank all of you who send us such kind comments regarding our station. Second, a special thank you to the dozens and dozens of Reggae Bands who have provided us with eloquent beautiful drops to play at the station. (An extraordinary hat tip to those bands who recorded their drop as a song). One of the biggest challenges that our station has faced merely is staying on the air. It is not that we don't want to be the best Reggae Station you have ever heard online; it is that the rules keep changing, the companies keep changing. The players keep changing. May I give you an example? For over three years Big Reggae Mix Streamed Loud and Proud at TuneIn both on their website and through the TuneIn Radio App. We have contacted TuneIn at least 12 times, and now I am writing to their support team every other week. Why am I so upset that we are off of TuneIn? Answer: We lost our license to stream and legally relaunched our station on July 12, 2019, after being on the air continuously for 24/7 since November 5, 2014. How many listeners were following and registered at TuneIn? Answer: 68,400 So here is TuneIn, streaming thousands of stations through their platform and this I can tell you from experience: Don't ever go off the air because you will never again be on Tunein. The company will tell you that they are not accepting any new station. If this little rant has inspired you, please be so kind as to visit their support page at https://help.tunein.com/contact ( Click and it will take you to the page now). When you land on the page, the contact screen will look like this: Simply fill out the form as best you can and share with TuneIn your sincere passion for Big Reggae Mix. We will have an update regarding TuneIn soon. In the meantime, check out our home page where you can stream directly and/or through Radio.net (one of our favorite streaming platforms). Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Go Back In The Water by Mitch Santell Yes I thought I had seen and read it all in this world but then I thought, oh my, we must have Reggae Ice Cream! I love it. Levi Roots and his Caribbean-inspired Reggae Reggae sauces were a food phenomenon. And now, having already conquered the supermarket shelves and the charts (yes, he was once nominated for a MOBO Award and has released seven cookbooks), the Brixton-based jerk master is set to churn out his very own brand of Reggae Reggae ice-cream. Roots - real name Keith Valentine Alexander David Bright Graham - has signed a three-year licensing deal with a Cornish ice-cream company to produce the unique range of ice-creams and sorbets. And it's expected to launch next year. Yikes. “I am so excited to be launching my very own fabulicious range of the most delicious flavour ice creams you will have tasted,” Roots said in an interview with Cornwall Live. “Check them out and let your taste buds be jumping for joy.” Roots first shot to fame on the hit BBC TV show Dragon’s Den after being approached by a producer who spotted him selling his jerk sauces at the Notting Hill Carnival. Catching the eye of investor Peter Jones, Roots went on to secure £50,000 worth of funding and introduce the world to his now-famous Reggae Reggae sauce. After joining forces with the award-winning Callestick dairy farm near Truro, Cornwall, Roots’s latest culinary creation appears to be peaking the interest of the major supermarket chains according to the farm. “We’ve had many meetings with Levi and his team over the last few months,” notes Callestick sales director, David Jeffs, “and the flavours we are working on are truly delicious and very different to anything you will currently find in freezer cabinets.” Read more here now: http://bit.ly/2Pa9NX7 #icecream #dessert #food #foodporn #summer #foodie #chocolate #gelato #yummy #delicious #instafood #love #desserts #sweet #foodphotography #tasty #foodblogger #instagood #yum #foodgasm #coffee #instagram #cake #sweets #sweettooth #vegan #foodstagram #helado #ice #bhfyp #happy #foodies #cafe #eat #photography #dessertporn #vanilla #milkshake #foodlover #eis #strawberry #fun #icecreamlover #gelateria #summertime #photooftheday #gelatoartigianale #birthday #nutella #bhfyp #foodpics #waffles #picoftheday #icecreamporn #cookies #icecreamtime #fresh #softserve #icecreamshop #foods #icecreamlover #icecream #instafood #icecreamtime #gelato #oman #icecreamaddict #delicious #foodie #foodporn #icecreamlovers #icecreams #dessert #icecreamlove #instagood #icecreamcone #food #foodstagram #desserts #icecreamshop #chocolate #uae #giveawayalert #dubai #ilovefood #giveawaytime #giveawaycontest #foodblogger #play #repost #unikai #dubaicontest #iloveunikai #instacontest #ilovedubai #shareandwinin #playandwin #fmcguae #contestalert #fmcgdubai #facebookcontest #foodlover #omancontest #unikaicontests #dubaigiveaway #gelatoitaliano #yummy #summer #icecreamofinsta #gelatolovers #foodgasm #icecreamporn #sprinkles #icecreamday #tasty #gelatoartigianale #foodiegram #lifeindubai #icecreamcones
Reflections On How Old Trends Become New Trends by Mitch Santell So you want to know a little secret about Big Reggae Mix? Over the past 4+ years that we have been streaming this station 24/7 loud and proud, most of our listeners are in Europe, not America. We keep thinking we'll get more listeners in the USA, but it's Europe including most of Germany, England, France, Italy, Belgium and many more that are feeling us on their tablets, PCs and iPhones or Smartphones. After Europe, we have Asia and all of the Pacific Islands. I'll admit there is a period where we get a lot of people in Alaska as well as California tuning in. Our station has a life of its own. The quality of the content, as well as the passion for all kinds of Reggae artists worldwide, is what fuels this station. Yeah Mon! Jah Bless! Why a whole new generation of young Europeans are turning to old-school reggae Acamera sweeps across the verdant, shimmering beauty of Jamaica before descending on to a raffishly charming wooden house built into the hills. We’re at a music studio where four of the pioneers who gave birth to reggae are congregated to record a new album. ‘It’s tranquil, a real feeling of nature, just birds, trees and the wind,’ says 71-year-old Ken Boothe, whose seductive voice is smooth as rum, just as it was in 1974 when ‘Everything I Own’ stormed the British charts. Boothe is one of the stars of a beguiling new documentary, Inna De Yard, about the rise and fall of roots reggae, which reached its peak in the late 1970s with Bob Marley’s ‘conscious’ lyric-writing and is now witnessing a revival. What made the music so distinctive were two key elements: earnest harmonies, especially of the Rastafarian reggae singers, underpinned by the characteristic ‘one drop’ of the rhythm guitar and bass drum. It heralded a simple ‘dirt music’, grounded in the sun-baked earth of Jamaica’s ghettos, such as Trench Town, from where it emerged. Fundamentally, roots reggae was a music of black liberation, a narrative of freedom from subjugation: either in escaping to mythical Mother Africa or in death, over which the slave master and his colonial successor held no dominion. When, in ‘Talkin’ Blues’, Marley sang ‘cold ground was my bed at night/ and rock was my pillow too’, his compatriots recognised it as real-life biography; his suffering was theirs. Rooted in hope and redemption, these searing, ethereal songs evoked an eternal life beyond this one, its lyrics peppered with reflections on the remembrance of slavery, most soulfully rendered in Peter Tosh’s ‘Stop That Train’. But embedded in these serious themes were wit and optimism. As the Heptones sang in ‘Sufferer’s Time’, the popularity of reggae meant ‘a time fe sufferer’s drive big car/ a time fe sufferer’s live it up’. After Marley’s death in 1981 that spiritually uplifting old-school reggae was eclipsed by harsher-sounding dancehall stars whose music was characterised by highly sexualised ‘punany’ lyrics. The cultural coup was confirmed by 1990 when Bunny Wailer (one of the three original Wailers) was bottled off stage by a young crowd at the Sting Festival. Like many of his contemporaries, Wailer seemed thereafter to withdraw from performing. Premature decline also affected Kiddus I, Winston McAnuff and Cedric Myton, who along with Ken Boothe (the godfather of reggae) star in Inna De Yard. All four, in past decades, suffered terrible misfortunes and yet, late in their careers, they find themselves lauded, in a remarkable turnaround. The documentary charts them coming together on the remote outskirts of Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, to record an album in a makeshift studio known locally as music mountain. A Commentary on Endless Reggae Possibilities by Mitch Santell
So many artist and so little time! If you have not heard of this Artist you might want to check him out.
Evan G. aka Satta Don Dada specializes in bridging the gap between modern day Bass Music stylings and traditional Reggae/Hip-Hop vibes. His prowess as a DJ was recognized early on by his peers and later reaffirmed by Skrillex hand picking him to open for his 2014 Mothership Tour. His name as a producer started to gain exposure in 2012, when won the legendary Dubstep/Grime artist Cotti’s “Goin’ To War’ remix competition. Since then he’s been local support for such acts as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, DJ Premier, Araabmuzik, and Kamasi Washington, among many other headliners. He’s also been featured in world renowned media outlets like Mixmag, XLR8R, Fact Mag, Boiler Room, Magnetic Mag, and many more noteworthy publications.
The more I study the genre of Reggae the more avenue of new music and creativity that I find. Here is what Evan G. aka Satta Don Dada is doing in Detroit. This is so cool! I can dig it.
Local DJ Evan Glicker, also known by his stage name Satta Don Dada, played the first show of his four-month residency at Detroit City Distillery earlier this month.
He says that he plans to bring in food pop-ups, have guest artists, and have nights where he focuses on certain subgenres of reggae to diversify the sounds people are hearing. Glicker has been producing reggae music in Michigan for over 15 years, incorporating roots and dub elements into his work. At a young age, he found a handful of reggae records in his dads vinyl collection. Glicker says he remembers feeling drawn to the sound because it sounded different than any other type of music he heard before. “The rock records stuck out to me, I liked the jazz, but the reggae stuck out to me, because I was sort of entranced by the phrases,” Glicker says. He added that although they speak English in much of Jamaica, the patois sounds very different and has influenced his music through the years. After graduating from high school, Glicker attended New York University and the Toronto Film School, where he studied music and learned more about Jamaican culture and music production. “[Reggae] pulls at my heartstrings to some degree, sometimes it makes me wanna cry, sometimes it makes me joyful,” says Glicker, adding that reggae's ability to make people feel emotions is something that draws people to the genre. Within his own music, Glicker focuses on heavy beats and enticing vocals to get the crowd into the music. Satta Don Dada produces mostly reggae, dub, dancehall, and jungle music, as well as hip-hop. He says there aren’t a lot of artists who are mixing vinyl records and producing his style of music, which has helped to set him apart from other DJs. When he is performing as Satta Don Dada, Glicker says he has the ability to read a room and understand what types of music to play, whether it be roots, dub, dancehall, or other related genres of music. A Commentary About Your Thoughts and You by Mitch Santell During my time on this planet, I have found that people around you either go to the positive or the negative or they are neutral. These same people either enhance your life or you feel like crap when you are around them. Know what I mean? The reason I have always remained on the positive side is that I have learned to change the narrative. People in your life who don't have excellent coping skills will openly tell you that they don't want to hear any more of your stories. The most intimate story that we share in life is the story that we tell ourself. Now for some of us, we may be called delusional because we have learned the art of "act as if." An example of this would be to act as if "everything is okay" until it is. Here is something to help shift you: Your thoughts play an important role in shaping your imagination and creating the state of being you want to be in. When we are in the middle of a crappy situation we often take up a negative dialogue in our head. In some ways we think we are solving the situation by creating all these negative scenarios and dramas. Instead we never realize that a negative dialogue creates a negative outcome. Think about it. How would you judge your thoughts right now? Are you hopeful? Loving? Pissed Off? Angry? Trusting? Kind? Hateful? What dialogue is running in your head? If your thoughts are rehashing the past events of your life, or creating negative dramas through worry, doubt or fear you are using your imagination for the negative. In doing this you are creating a state of being that is detrimental to your wellbeing. You can’t learn the lesson and grow if you are wallowing in a negative vibration. To change it, you have to first change your thoughts because you cannot get to a better feeling with lousy thinking. Changing your thoughts requires work. It requires you to be vigilant. Hear a negative thought; change the story. Not only do you have to be cognizant of the dialogues going on the inside, you also have to police the thoughts coming to you from the outside. You are the authority of your thinking and you have to take back your control. The thoughts written on your mind by other people may need to be deleted. Learn to shut down outside opinions and start shifting your thinking. Any story that is creating a negative feeling is not worth repeating over and over again. When we were children we lived a life of mind-sight. We saw the tree and we climbed it. We never rationalized the challenge. Much to the chagrin of our parents, we just did it. In mind-sight thinking, we saw a world of possibilities. As we got older we shifted to eyesight. We looked at the challenges and came up with a multitude of reasons why it couldn’t be done. Our journey to this Planet Earth never came with a promise of smooth sailing. Adversity in your life is part of the path. You have a choice about the thoughts that dwell in your mind and you have a choice about how you go through an experience. See the possibilities. Rise to the challenge and never look back. The Correlation Between Reggae and Cannabis Culture Cannabis culture and reggae music have a few things in common that should be readily obvious, but some are not instantly identifiable. There have been a lot of positive vibes about this now and throughout the history of weed. The history of reggae music and weed involves Bob Marley and Peter Tosh from the island of Jamaica. While both reggae artists are deceased, they have left a legacy of a vibrant cannabis culture behind and it has grown in leaps and bounds since that time. The Reggae Artists In a world of cannabis, Jamaica comes to the forefront because of its popular reggae artist Bob Marley or Robert Marley who loved to smoke weed when he was alive. In fact, during his stage performances, both Bob Marley and Peter Tosh could be seen with a joint in their mouths or smoking in a dressing room prior to the performance. It could be said that the ‘high potency” of the weed would give them a better performance. To many people, it seemed to greatly influence their performance. The RastafariansIn In many Caribbean countries including Jamaica, Rastafarians are an organization that uses cannabis as part of their sacrilegious worship, creating a cannabis culture that set them apart from the rest of society back in the day. The same is true even today. There are some Rastafarians including Peter Tosh and Bob Marley who use weed and reggae to advance themselves. In such case, reggae music and weed or the cannabis culture goes hand in hand. Healing and Treatment Bob Marley was the major influence on cannabis and reggae music and when he died, fortunately for us, this did not die with him. If he were alive, he would be so pleased with how far the cannabis culture has come. In Bob Marley’s own words, “Weed is the healing of the nation.” In other words, Bob Marley believed that weed could treat and heal individuals. And even today, this is the same concept in the cannabis culture. If a past reggae artist can believe such a phenomenon, then why not the entire world? The Laws Since weed is tied to the culture in Jamaica, let us look at the existing status as it stands throughout the world. In the past, the cannabis culture in Jamaica has always been more prohibitive until recently when locals and tourists are allowed to smoke a joint or two here and there without prosecution. More and more, it has been accepted as a healing herb and not just to be used recreationally. A law was passed in 2015 to decriminalize the possession of specific amounts of weed, but for only personal use. Many are still waiting for full decriminalization and licenses to be issued to small farmers and large companies. The Jamaican government also allows residents to grow five plants in their home for personal use. Final Summary The cannabis culture, if taken seriously and with the onset of decriminalization in Jamaica would mean that there is promise for the future. Since the country relies heavily on tourism, they are looking for another opportunity to boost revenue. Tourists are already in love with reggae music; all because of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh artistic work. Now, the government is hoping that the love that these two artists had for cannabis and the improvement in the cannabis culture will create a strong correlation that will take the country into a different direction than it was in the past. It is possible that Peter Tosh’s music “legalize It’ will come to fruition sooner rather than later. Reflections on one of my favorite Reggae Bands by Mitch Santell Every time a new Stick Figure track is released, it always brings a big smile to my face. About six hours ago, this video was placed on YouTube, and I am happy to share it with you here. “Angels Above Me” written by Scott Woodruff and TJ O’Neill Video by Bulldog Media. Copyright © Stick Figure 2019. All Rights Reserved. As soon as I heard the track, I knew that Stick Figure has another top-shelf album coming out. For those who want to get the track now, here is the link: http://bit.ly/2TRblUF Stick Figure is my number one Pop Reggae Band. Even though so many see Reggae as a small genre, there are so many off-shoots of Reggae that it takes a band like Stick Figure to show the world a bigger sound. We offer these links below so you can order a copy of their latest release for yourself. You Can Order The Vinyl & Digital Download here: https://stickfigurestore.com/products/package-2-vinyl-download Launched in Duxbury, Massachusetts, Stick Figure showcases the talents of multi-instrumentalist and producer Scott Woodruff. Stick Figure’s music has a unique style that creatively blends upbeat roots reggae with the reverberating echoes of dub. Often referred to as the “one man band,” Scott single-handedly created 4 full length albums from 2006-2012 (a fifth album, “Reprise Sessions,” was recorded with a full band and released in 2010), and has sold over 50,000 albums worldwide. Each of Stick Figure’s songs are created by recording instruments individually, layering tracks on top of one another in unison. During the summer of 2009, Scott moved from East to West Coast, laying down roots in California, where he currently resides. In June of 2012, he released his most recent album, “Burial Ground,” arguably Stick Figure’s most extraordinary work to date. After hitting #1 on both iTunes and Billboard Reggae charts, Scott decided to bring the music to the people, putting together a live band and heading out on the road. The current lineup adds the creative, musical talents of Kevin Bong (Keyboards), Kevin Offitzer (Drums) and Tommy Suliman (Bass). In the Fall of 2012, Stick Figure embarked on their first ever tour, linking up with The Green and performing 18 shows along the East Coast. Their debut tour ignited flames under both the band and dedicated fans who’ve been patiently waiting to hear Stick Figure’s music live. Stick Figure has since toured the nation with Tribal Seeds (Winter 2013), Passafire (Summer 2013), John Brown’s Body (Fall 2013), The Expendables (Winter 2014) and Rebelution (Summer 2014) and also headlined their first nationwide tour in the Fall of 2014, boasting numerous sold out dates from coast to coast. With 5 full-length albums and a top-notch live performance, the Stick Figure sound has been elevated to new heights and has the upcoming sixth studio album, scheduled for release in 2015, heralded as the most anticipated album in Reggae music.
